In Google Chrome, the browser somehow became infected and now shows a blank page with the letters QFxZ-CAA and it redirects to wewewesearch.com.

The whois on that domain shows ipower is the host and it does show an administrative contact. Perhaps he has more information.

It appears to be a new virus as no solutions pull up through an internet search or by searching direct on anti-virus software websites. I’m running the free AVG now, but it’s not finding anything.

If you know how to solve this, please post!

After not finding a virus and later restarting, here are 3 of the annoying pop up ads the virus now displays:

In Drupal, the default Log In and Log Out in the main ‘navigation’ menu may be less than desirable. If you use the navigation for other categories, it’s nice to keep the functions like ‘Log In’ separate for an easier user experience.

The following code will allow you to easily add dynamic log in / log out text in the footer, depending on whether you’re logged in or not. It will also greet you if you’re signed in, so it’s obvious what your log in status is. Just replace the URLs with your domain and customize whatever footer links you want.

<?php global $user;
if ($user->uid) {
print t("Hi @name! | Log Out | Privacy Policy", array('@name' => $user->name));}
else
{
print t("Log In / Register | Privacy Policy");
}
?>

Within the admin’s ‘block’, just edit the footer and paste the above in. You can then disable the ‘Log Out’ menu item in the main ‘navigation’.

I hope this helps someone with their project.

First impressions suggest that Google Chrome is quite an impressive browser, but after longer term use, it seems like an unfinished, 80% complete project.

Advantages of Google Chrome:

Much faster! Way faster than IE and a little faster than Firefox

It doesn’t crash as much and if a tab does crash, only the one tab closes. Any other open tabs and windows remain independently

The find box is unintrusive- better than it floating around cluttering the screen like on IE and Firefox

Convenient quick search feature- you can select any text and right-clicking gives the option to search the keyword(s) in new tab

It shows your most visited websites on the homepage – great!

If you accidentally close a tab, it’s no problem. Simply go to the home page and it will show ‘recently closed tabs’ – a very nice feature

Easy keyword searching of history

You can right-click on the tab and duplicate the page

Lightweight and reduced clutter at the top of browser

Drawbacks of Google Chrome

It doesn’t work properly with many websites- perhaps not rendering ajax or javascript correctly.

For example, omnis.com it doesn’t let you buy a domain name. I’m unable to submit a timesheet for payroll on the ADP website.

Microsoft doesn’t work, no MSN or passport login, for example you can’t get into microsoft adcenter.

On godaddy.com, it showed a half-blank page, missing the normal navigation and with completely messed up formatting- something that would show fine in IE and Firefox.

On istockphoto, it didn’t let Chrome users buy anything (this may have been fixed by now).

Online demos might not be supported. For example, an interspire email marketer demo didn’t work. It said “Your browser doesn’t support html editing. Try Firefox.”

Google Chrome doesn’t work well with SalesForce either. If you try to create a view and edit pick list, for example, it will block picklist popups.

It doesn’t work well with WordPress either. Some of the features are unusable and the rendering of the page is different in Google Chrome.

HTML rendering is different than IE and Firefox and a little messed up in some cases. For example, text inside paragraph tags won’t always wrap around floated images. I’ve had to swap many of my P tags for BR tags

Some css styles don’t function the same like in IE or Firefox

Popups are blocked without any noticeable indication. It can make it seem like a website is not working.

Links from emails don’t always open up a tab in the browser. It will sometimes do nothing.

If you ask browser to remember your password, then enter it wrong, it will continue to remember and autofill the wrong password everytime you come across that site. There’s no way to remove it without deleting all of your other stored ‘remembered’ passwords. The very convenient feature turned very inconvenient.

It chokes on PDFs. The entire Google Chrome may crash trying to open some PDF files.

Printing features are not as good as in IE. In IE, you can right-click, choose print, and just print the selection. There’s no option for printing text selections in Chrome. It’s an inconvenience, as some webpages contain a lot of distracting graphics and it’s nice to simply print a text selection.

Printing a regular page isn’t as convenient- it’s buried under a drop down menu on the top right under a document icon.

Copying images from a website and trying to paste into another application usually doesn’t work

Selecting and copying text from a website doesn’t always work either- it won’t always save into the clipboard

It’s really unfortunate this potential Internet Explorer and Firefox killer stopped short of it’s potential. Some might still find this fast, lightweight browser is still better than IE for general use, but being incompatible with so many websites is really a downer. Maybe their next version will be “the one”…

Within Google, just do a search for ‘Google’…

<img src="http://www.trentmueller.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/google-search-results-450x422.gif" alt="Google\'s search results are wrong. The search results are wrong. Notice the domain names of other websites. The title & descriptions don’t match the domain names and links.

Then you click the #1 result for Google (which said it was Google), but it goes to the Dex website.

The problem extends beyond searching for Google, if you search ANYTHING, the results are wrong. Nothing works at all! The entire Google search is down and has been at least for the last 30 minutes.

Dreamweaver has a powerful search/replace ability which includes ‘regular expressions’. This allows you to scan and replace particular html without affecting data.

Here’s an example of how useful this is:

Let’s say you are harvesting content from Wikipedia and putting it on your own website. Though I don’t endorse that activity, it is allowed according to the GDFL and a lot of people do it. So, here’s a way to make it easy.

Let’s say you find a huge table full of data that you wish to use on your own website. Since Wikipedia has tons of links and junk in the code, you want to strip it all out. One way is to copy and paste into Excel, then save as a .csv or .txt file, thus stripping out the extra invisible formatting html code that was previously a part of it. Then, close and re-open the .csv or .txt into Excel, then copy and paste into Dreamweaver (or your HTML editor). While this works, Excel still seems to copy over some html formatting, such as <td height="17" … on every field of the table, which is annoying.

You can do a find/replace in Dreamweaver for height=”17” and leave the replace field blank. That would solve that problem, however, Wikipedia often uses footnotes which add [1] [2] [3] etc in superscript, such as the example below. The question is how do we delete these brackets from our copied table, but preserve the data. Good news- we can do that with Dreamweaver, using regular expressions.

Change from this:

Batman Begins[1][2]

Superman

Army of Darkness[3]

Into this:

Batman Begins

Superman

Army of Darkness

If you had a huge table full of this with 100+ rows with 50 or more footnotes, it would take a long time to manually remove all of the brackets by hand. Here’s a way to automate it in Dreamweaver:

(Make sure you are searching the ‘source code‘ and that the ‘Use regular expression’ box is checked)

Find:

([^<]*)\[[^"]*

Replace:

$1

Result:
Dreamweaver will instantly strip out all the junk from your code and replace it with the core code while preserving your data. In this case, the wildcard variable will preserve anything between
and
.

Explanation:
The find is the prefix of the tags, then the wildcard variable that’s stored: ([^<]*) then, I wanted to remove the brackets, so I put one in, but since we’re using expressions, it has to be ‘escaped’ to tell it we literally mean the bracket, so I put this \ before the [ then I added a non-stored wildcard variable (the other junk I want removed), so I added: [^"]* then the close tag
. Then the replace is the simple $1 variable between the tags which recalls the stored variable. Very cool!

Another challenge:
Let’s say you want to copy a huge list of links from Wikipedia and change them to our own links on our own website. Here’s an example:

Change from this:
href="/wiki/Army-of-Darkness">
href="/wiki/Raiders-of-the-Lost-Ark">
href="/wiki/Pulp-Fiction">

Into this:
href="http://www.domain.com/Army-of-Darkness.php">
href="http://www.domain.com//Raiders-of-the-Lost-Ark.php">
href="http://www.domain.com/Pulp-Fiction.php">

In Dreamweaver, select Find/Replace…

1. Check ‘use regular expression’
2. Do Find for:
href="/wiki/([^<]*)">
4. Replace:
href="http://www.domain.com/$1.php">
5. It preserves the variable inside

Without the regular expression, you could have done Find/Replace for the first part, but when you wanted to add the .php to the end, you’d be stuck. How else would you do it?

Pretty incredible, huh? You can automate the changing of links or anything on an entire website with thousands of links and pages in just seconds. All using the stored wildcard variable.

([^<]*) is stored (use $1 to retreive in replace)
[^"]* is unstored

You can also do Find/Replace to recall multiple variables at once, like this:

If multiple wildcards:
([^<]*) ([^<]*) ([^<]*)
Use:
$1 $2 $3

14.	See what websites share your IP address (and how many) (and find an IP address for any domain): http://www.seologs.com/ip-domains.html You want to check and make sure you’re not associated with bad IP addresses (used for spam sites, porn, etc). Why this is useful:
a.	It can also see if your host is giving you a good deal or not. If too many websites hosted, you may reconsider hosts.

To become a competent web marketer is to dip a foot into each of the numerous social media networking pools. I will tell you exactly which these are right now:

Facebook.com

Myspace.com

Linkedin.com

Digg.com

Twitter.com

Meetup.com

Besides the social media, you will also find benefit in involvement with:

Craigstlist.org

Evite.com

Stumbleupon.com

del.icio.us

To be successful in the popular online social media networks, you must be involved in the websites above. Create a profile on each. Interlink them. Build your network by adding friends and connections. One way to add glue to your overall social media marketing mix is to have a blog. Ideally, host a blog on your own server, such as WordPress, which is free. You can then add content, and syndicate it using the help of FeedBurner.com, and you can get an idea of how many subscribers and contacts you have.

Post to your blog regularly and get Google and other blog search engines to scan your site. When you start posting regularly, you’ll be surprised how fast Google will spider your blog. It’s hungry for fresh content!

After you post to your blog, add your postings to Digg and other user submitted news sites. You may also want to twitter your blog postings. After time, you will have ‘followers’ on twitter- just more contacts established for future web marketing.

It does take work to build up subscribers, friends, and contacts, but it is a worthwhile effort if you intend to do business online. Good luck!
